FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of K-9 Vader, a police dog who served the department for three years.

Sheriff Kyle Bacon said Vader recently had been battling a serious illness. Despite veterinary treatment and support from his handler, Lt. Jared Anthis, the dog’s condition worsened.

Vader joined the sheriff’s office in 2023 and was assigned to narcotics enforcement.

During his service, Vader was deployed 314 times, leading to the seizure of 1,868.63 grams of illegal narcotics, 63 items of drug paraphernalia and $6,690 in cash, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials said Vader also served as a trusted partner and companion to Anthis, with their bond built on extensive training and daily work.

The sheriff’s office said Vader’s dedication and service reflected the mission of the department and expressed gratitude for his years of service to Franklin County residents.
