Health department warns of bad sewage disposal contractors

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS(KBSI) – The Southern Seven Health Department is urging citizens in the region to be aware of recent scam sewage disposal contractors after they say they’ve received multiple reports.
Contractors promising to clear sewage lines or do work only to abandon halfway through, leaving behind hazardous waste.
Shawnna Rhine, is the Outreach Coordinator for the Southern Seven Health Department, she shares what you need to know.
“Well, recently southern seven health department had received, some complaints and some reports that there were individuals circulating throughout our region claiming to be qualified contractors and able to install septic systems. We have since found out that in many cases, these individuals are not licensed. They’re not qualified in order to do this service, and it’s leaving many homeowners, with unfinished, septic systems, as well as not meeting the state and local standards required for septic installation” says Rhine.
These contractors often make out with thousands of dollars leaving homeowners with a mess, and when it comes to sewage it can quickly turn into a public health hazard.
“When your sewage system is not installed properly, it can lead to contaminated groundwater, create public health hazards and result in costly legal, as well as corrective action from the property owner. So, it’s important that when you have a septic installed on your property, that you contact your local health department or your local authority to make sure that you are using a qualified installer and have it inspected once it’s finished” says Rhine.
Things to know before deciding on a contractor:
-Ask for documentation or proof that they are licensed. If you are still unsure contact your local health department or local authority to confirm.
-Be leery of contractors who demand full payment up front or pressure for an immediate decision.
-Look up the business or person online to see local reviews and legitimacy.
