Kentucky breaks ground on medical cannabis safety facility

MAYFIELD, Ky., (KBSI) — Gov. Andy Beshear joined local leaders in Graves County on Tuesday for the groundbreaking of the commonwealth’s first medical cannabis safety compliance facility.

The $1 million project, led by State38 LLC, will create about a dozen full-time jobs and provide essential safety and quality controls for the growing medical cannabis industry.

“Team Kentucky is dedicated to ensuring every Kentuckian with a qualifying condition has safe access to quality medical cannabis,” Beshear said. “I’m excited to see this new industry take root here in Graves County.”

The facility will receive samples from licensed cultivators, processors and producers across the state and test them to ensure they meet specific safety and compliance standards.

State38 LLC owner Tannette Henson, a Graves County native, said the facility will employ a medical director, quality manager, technicians and other staff.

The project represents a key piece of infrastructure for Kentucky’s medical cannabis program, which was legalized in 2023 and began Jan. 1, 2025.

Local leaders, including State Rep. Kimberly Holloway and Mayfield Mayor Kathy O’Nan, praised the project for its potential to bring economic growth and opportunity to the region.
