Man accused of arson at Mt. Vernon apartment complex

MT. VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) – A Mt. Vernon man faces charge an aggravated arson charge after police say he started a fire at an apartment complex on July 8.

The Mt. Vernon Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Mt. Vernon Fire Department and Litton’s Ambulance responded to a report of a fire at an apartment complex at 2020 Broadway at 2:44 a.m. on Friday, July 8.

Additional fire departments were called to assist the Mt. Vernon Fire Department to put out the fire. Officers and deputies assisted in evacuating the complex. Numerous residents were displaced. One was treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation from the fire.

The State of Illinois Fire Marshall’s Office, Mt. Vernon Fire Department and Mt. Vernon Police Department investigated the fire. The investigation determined the fire was an intentional act.

On July 14, the Jefferson County State’s Attorneys Office requested and received a warrant charging Davis with aggravated arson. Bond on the warrant was set at $500,000 (10% applies).

The Mt. Vernon Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department detectives worked with the United States Marshalls Service to locate Davis. On July 19, members of the United States Marshalls Service took Davis into custody in Indianapolis, Indiana on the Jefferson County, Illinois warrant and a warrant from Indiana for domestic battery.

Davis remained in custody in Indiana pending extradition to Illinois.
