Man accused of assaulting woman, leaving her on sandbar of Mississippi River

CARLISLE COUNTY, Ky. (KBSI) – A Wickliffe man faces assault and wanton endangerment charges after a woman was found left on a sandbar in the Mississippi River in Carlisle County.

Donald Deweese, 45, of Wickliffe faces charges of assault 4th degree and wanton endangerment 2nd degree.

The Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office was contacted at 3 a.m. on Nov. 2 about a missing woman.

Deweese had gone trail riding with the woman on the Carlisle County Trail Systems, according to the Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office.

He returned home without the woman. When questioned he just stated that he left her on the sandbar in the Mississippi River.

The Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office and the Carlisle County Rescue squad responded to the bottoms area and began searching for the missing woman. About 5:26 a.m., she was heard screaming for help by first responders and was treated at the scene. Evidence at the scene suggested that a physical assault had taken place, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies found Deweese asleep at his home about 7 a.m. where he admitted to having physically assaulted the female, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was arrested and taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail.
