MDC to host family-friendly Trek-N-Treat exploring Missouri’s cave creatures

FOX23 News at 9 p.m.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites families to explore the fascinating — and slightly spooky — world beneath Missouri’s surface during Trek-N-Treat, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center.

Southeast Missouri is home to a hidden world of white cavefish, cave salamanders, grotto sculpin, and bats. This Halloween season, MDC’s Trek-N-Treat trail will feature educational cave creature characters, interactive games, and crafts to help families learn about the importance and mystery of Missouri’s caves.

Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and bring Halloween buckets, as MDC’s costumed cave characters will be handing out treats along the quarter-mile trail. The route takes about 30 minutes to complete and is designed for all ages. While some terrain may be uneven or grassy, it is generally suitable for sport strollers.

“Caves may seem spooky, but they are full of life, wonder, and unique species you won’t see anywhere else,” said Alex Holmes, assistant manager of the MDC Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center. “We look forward to welcoming families underground, inspiring curiosity, and showing why Missouri’s subsurface wildlife is worth celebrating.”

The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
