Missouri DMV’s see congestion, as people rush to be Real ID compliant

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI(KBSI) – As of Tuesday May 7, 2025 the federal government has begun enforcing the Real ID Act.
This requires all travelers aged 18 and older to have a Read Id compliant driver’s license or other form of acceptable identification to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings.
Missouri DMVs are experiencing congestion and long wait times as people rush to be Real ID compliant.
Local DMV Clerks say they’ve seen a lot of people come in because they believe the Real ID is mandatory for everyone.
A Real ID is only needed if you plan on traveling domestically or entering some government buildings like a military base or federal courthouse. Raschell Jones Hodgkiss is a Clerk at Chaffee DMV.
She shares what you should know before coming into the DMV for your Real ID.
“So a lot of our hold ups is the marriage license for the women. If you’ve ever been married and changed your name, you have to have every certified copy unless you have went back to your maiden name” says Jones Hodgkiss. “Also, if you’ve been married more than 20 years you will not have a certified copy so you will need to go to your county of recorder of deeds and tell them you need a certified copy of your marriage. Which they print out that day or they can mail it to you that’s what we refer people to do.”
When going to the DMV for a Real ID in Missouri you will need a passport or birth certificate, two pieces of mail such as a utility bill, no handwritten mail and if you have a PO box you will need proof of two physical addresses and a social security card.
