Missouri gas prices jump 26 cents in a week amid rising oil costs

MISSOURI (KBSI) — The average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Missouri rose sharply over the past week, according to AAA.
The statewide average is now $3.38 per gallon, up 26 cents from last week and 58 cents higher than a year ago. Among major metro areas, drivers in St. Louis are paying the highest average at $3.62 per gallon, while Joplin has the lowest at $3.15.
The national average also increased, reaching $3.88 per gallon. That is 29 cents higher than last week and 78 cents more than this time last year.
AAA officials say rising crude oil costs are the primary driver behind the increase, citing ongoing conflict in the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate crude oil is currently trading just below $100 per barrel, a significant increase in recent months.
“Crude oil costs account for about 60% of the final price that drivers pay at the pump,” AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said. “As long as crude oil prices remain elevated, gas prices will follow.”
Gas prices in Missouri have not reached or exceeded the current average since October 2023.
AAA recommends several ways for drivers to improve fuel efficiency, including avoiding aggressive driving, maintaining proper tire pressure, reducing excess vehicle weight and driving at moderate speeds.
Motorists can also use the AAA mobile app to find lower gas prices and access travel tools, roadside assistance and other services.
