Missouri State Highway Patrol investigating death of former New Madrid County Sheriff

NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the death of former New Madrid County Sheriff Bud Cooper.

Cooper, a 30-year veteran of the highway patrol, died May 26 at his home in New Madrid.

The investigation was requested by the New Madrid County sheriff within 24 hours of Cooper’s passing.

According to Sgt. Brad Germann, the investigation is ongoing.

Cooper had supervised the DDCC unit of Troop E and served as New Madrid County sheriff from August 2020 to June 2024.
