Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus in De Soto

DE SOTO, Mo., (KBSI) — Mosquitoes collected from a trap in De Soto tested positive for West Nile virus July 22, according to the Jefferson County Health Department.
Health officials notified the city and began mosquito-control efforts in affected areas that evening. The department will continue monitoring mosquito populations across Jefferson County.
No human cases were reported in the announcement.
Residents are encouraged to use an Environmental Protection Agency-approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR3535 or 2-undecanone. Wearing clothing that covers exposed skin can also reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
Health officials recommend emptying standing water around homes at least once a week and scrubbing containers that held water.
