Multiple agencies responded to a house fire started by dehumidifier

BENTON, Mo. (KBSI) – Multiple agencies responded to a fire over the weekend.

According to the Benton Fire Departments Facebook page on Sunday, October 20th, 2024, at 1:19 pm, the Benton Fire Department was paged out to the 200-block of Cape Girardeau Street for a structure fire.

Mutual aid was contacted immediately as well.
The residents were not in the home at the time of the fire but noticed something was wrong when they arrived home and called for help before attempting to go inside.
After the fire was put out, the cause was determined to be a dehumidifier.
The Benton Fire Department says this is a great reminder to always trust your gut and if you see something, say something.
Responding agencies are Oran Fire Protection District, Scott City Fire Department, NBC Fire Protection District, and North Scott County Ambulance District.
