Murphysboro woman killed in crash in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – A Murphysboro woman was killed in a crash Wednesday morning just west of Murphysboro.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two vehicle traffic crash on Illinois Highway 149 at Violet Road about four miles west of Murphysboro on Dec. 7 at 8:52 a.m.

A silver 2016 Toyota Corolla was eastbound on Highway 149 approaching Violet Road. Witness statements and scene evidence shows the driver, Summer Scholz, 23, of Murphysboro, was negotiating a curve and in the road and lost control, according to the sheriff’s office.

At the same time, a 2022 Freightliner driven westbound by Clinton Simpson, 60 of Southhaven, Miss. was approaching the same location.

Scholz’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck the front of the Freightliner, according to the sheriff’s office.

Scholz was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.

The crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.

The Jackson County Ambulance Service, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the Illinois Department of Transportation assisted.
