New faces added to Paducah’s restored ‘Greeting the Queens’ mural

PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — Six community figures have been added to Paducah’s “Greeting the Queens” mural following a five-week restoration project.

Muralist Herb Roe of Dafford Murals added Ro Morse, Mary Hammond, Charlie Cissell, Barron White, Marilyn Pirtle and Doc Hicks to the Ohio Riverfront scene.

The mural depicts July 2, 1996, when the Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and American Queen were docked in Paducah at the same time.

Morse helped maintain Paducah’s Wall-to-Wall murals, while Hammond, who has since died, led the Paducah Convention and Visitors Bureau. The newly painted figures join former Mayor Gerry B. Montgomery, Jo and Jim Grisham and others already featured in the mural.

Students attending the River Discovery Center’s summer art camp watched Roe complete the work and learned about his painting techniques and the community members represented in the mural.
