CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Old Town Cape Inc. will hold its annual Christmas tree lighting event in downtown Cape Girardeau.

The holiday season will begin in Downtown Cape Girardeau with the sixth annual Christmas Tree Lighting event on Friday, November 29, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Longstanding Old Town Cape volunteer, Teresa Maurer says, “As a child, I knew that Christmas was coming when the decorations went up on Broadway and Main Street. I hope many of you have that same feeling of excitement when you see the decorations downtown. We are proud of the Old Town Cape Christmas Tree. It has become the focal point of our downtown decorations, and attending the Official Tree Lighting ceremony on the Friday evening of Thanksgiving weekend has become a cherished tradition for many of the residents of not only Cape Girardeau, but also of the surrounding area. If you have attended this special event in the past, we say “Welcome back.”  If you are joining us for the very first time, we say “We’re so glad you decided to join us.”

You can watch Santa & Mrs. Claus light Old Town Cape, Inc.’s thirty-foot Christmas tree that will be housed in the Vasterling Suites Courtyard for the duration of the Christmas in Downtown season, enjoy live music from the Jerry Ford Ensemble and Christmas carolers, lluminated aerial acrobatics performances, purchase food and hot beverages from local food trucks, vote for the best decorated food truck, and roast s’mores around firepit stations.

The food trucks and the s’more stations will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The ensemble and carolers will play and sing at 5:45 p.m. welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus who will arrive at 6:10 p.m.

At 6:20 p.m. Santa will light the tree.

The crowd is encouraged to sing, mingle, take pictures, visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and our performing elves and enjoy the festive and beautiful downtown the night of the event and throughout the holiday season.

Fountain Street, between Broadway and Themis, will be closed to vehicle traffic but open to foot traffic beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2024.
