Paducah to open applications for $250 tree voucher program on November 15

PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — The Paducah Parks and Recreation Department will begin accepting applications Nov. 15 for its Tree Voucher Program, an initiative aimed at restoring the city’s tree canopy and encouraging homeowners to plant new shade trees. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 9, 2026.
The program provides a $250 voucher to owners of single-family homes within city limits for the purchase of approved shade tree species from participating local nurseries. Vouchers will be distributed in February after the review and approval process, allowing residents to buy trees in time for spring planting.
“This initiative is designed to encourage Paducah homeowners to plant trees on their private property to enhance Paducah’s tree canopy and ensure that future generations can enjoy the benefits of shade trees,” Mayor George Bray said.
“Trees improve air quality, reduce utility costs by providing shade, and enhance neighborhood beauty. This program is one of the most effective and beautiful ways we can invest in our city’s future.”
Parks and Recreation Director Amie Clark emphasized the environmental benefits, noting that expanding the urban canopy helps reduce heat, manage stormwater and support wildlife.
“This program makes it easier for residents to take part in that effort and see the positive impact right in their own yards and neighborhoods,” Clark said.
The department has partnered with James Sanders Nursery and Edwards Nursery to ensure adequate availability of approved shade trees. Once a voucher is redeemed, the nursery will invoice the city for up to $250. Planting, delivery and maintenance costs are the responsibility of the homeowner.
The program is limited to specific shade tree species and sizes; ornamentals are not included. Applications may be submitted online or in person at the Parks and Recreation Office at 2701 Park Avenue during business hours.
The city has budgeted $150,000 for the program. Vouchers will be valid through December 2026.
Informational postcards will be mailed to Paducah residents next week. Full program details and the application are available at the Tree Voucher Program website.
