Pedestrian struck by train near Carbondale dies

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – The pedestrian who was struck by a train in Carbondale Tuesday morning has died.

Michael L. Sykes-Branch, 22, of Carbondale died at a St. Louis area hospital on May 26. He was struck by a train between the 400 block of North Washington Street and North Illinois Avenue on May 24 around 11:29 a.m.

Officers provided life-saving medical treatment to Sykes-Branch. The Jackson County Ambulance Service also treated and took him to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. The victim was later transferred to a St. Louis hospital where he died.

All railroad crossings were closed for about an hour due to the train blocking the crossing to through traffic.

At this point in the investigation, police say there is not any evidence to support any foul play is involved. The death investigation is ongoing.
