CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Seniors and Law Enforcement Officers came together through SALT to strengthen community ties between law enforcement officers and the older individuals they serve.

SALT is Seniors and Law enforcement Together – as a group they get to know more about each other.

The annual SALT event was held at the Cape Elks today and had keynote speakers, recognized local veterans, connected seniors to local resources and gave them a chance to talk one-on-one with local officers. Cape County Sheriff Ruthann Dickerson attended the event.

The seniors come out, and it gives them an opportunity to mingle and visit with the law enforcement from our area, and it also gives several of the vendors that provide services to the seniors to come in and visit with the seniors in a setting that’s relaxed” says Dickerson.

The event ran from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Thursday September 3, 2026, with lunch served to those in attendance.

Kim Tanksley is a member of SALT and says the elderly population is vital in Southeast Missouri and connections like these make for a stronger community.

“We just want the senior population to know that we work together to keep the community as safe as possible and that’s what we’re here for” says Tanksley.
