CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Several dozen senior citizens gathered for Cape Girardeau County Senior Information Day.
It is held at Eagles Aerie #3775 on N. Spring from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 7.
MU Health Care’s Injury Prevention and Outreach presented a program called, “Keep Your Keys.”
The day will also have a question-and-answer session with local law enforcement (Jackson and Cape Girardeau police departments, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol) and the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
“I’m so grateful because they took the time, to really give us time.” says Valeria Sanchez, a local resident in Cape Girardeau.
The event hosted by S.A.L.T., Senior and Lawmen Together, had speakers and a variety of vendors from different businesses in Cape County.
Cape Girardeau Police Department, Chief of Police, Wes Blair, says the event is not only informational but also provides an opportunity for seniors to get out of the house and mingle with mingle with one another, “To bring senior citizens of our community to see some of the resources that might be available that they maybe didn’t know were available to them.”
That includes bringing awareness to all of the different scams out there right now, something that Valeria Sanchez says she couldn’t be more grateful for, “I’ve enjoyed being here, and I think this is great, I think I speak for all the senior’s here because again it’s just a wonderful place to be right now.”
Sanchez says the event helps Cape Girardeau law enforcement and seniors to work together in being more informed about their safety, “Not only do we get a free lunch, but it’s also it’s very, very invaluable, I come every year, and I just love it.”
