Sheriff warns of scam texts citing fake Illinois law targeting residents

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent surge in suspicious text messages attempting to scam recipients by threatening legal or collection action.

Authorities said the messages reference a fake statute, “Illinois Administrative Code, Section 15C-16.003,” which does not exist.

Officials said the messages are designed to create fear and trick individuals into providing personal information or clicking malicious links.

Residents who receive the messages are advised not to respond, avoid clicking any links and block the sender.

The sheriff’s office said anyone who may have interacted with one of the messages or has concerns should contact authorities for assistance.

An example message falsely claims an unpaid traffic ticket and threatens consequences such as license suspension, registration penalties and additional fees if payment is not made.
