Sikeston officer receives award for excellence in law enforcement
SIKESTON, Mo., (KBSI) — Detective Paula Nichols of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety has been named the 2025 Officer of the Year, receiving the CIT Law Enforcement Award of Excellence.
Nichols, a 16-year law enforcement veteran, is recognized for her dedication to community-based policing and her exceptional skills in handling mental health crises.
Her colleagues praise her for creating a fair and understanding environment for all individuals, including victims, suspects and those experiencing mental health crises.
Nichols is also commended for her willingness to go above and beyond, often following up with individuals in crisis and seeking additional resources to support them.
The award citation highlights a specific incident in which Nichols took initiative to minimize the traumatic impact on a family after a suicide, demonstrating a level of compassion and empathy rarely seen in law enforcement.
Nichols is also recognized for her active role in the Bootheel CIT Council, contributing to events, training and planning, and working collaboratively with other agencies and community partners.
The award was presented by Bootheel CIT Chair Detective Matt Cotner and Stoddard County Micro Council Chair Dexter PD Chief Hank Trout.
