Southern Seven health department gives tips on maintaining a healthier year

KSBI-The Southern Seven Health Department is sharing tips for those interested in having a healthy year.

They say the first thing you should do is have a plan.

Living healthy isn’t just about following a diet or program; it includes a lifestyle with healthy eating patterns, regular physical activity, and mental health and stress management. Start any health regimen by talking to your healthcare provider. Remember, what works for others might not work for you.

Sleep, age, genetics, diseases, medications, and environments may also contribute to weight management.

Make a commitment and write it down.

Having accountability plays a big role. Write down everything you eat and drink for a few days in a food and beverage
diary. Tracking physical activity, sleep, and emotions can also help you understand current habits and stressors.

Take a look at your lifestyle. Identify things that challenge your weight loss efforts such as little time built-in for exercise and high-calorie or sugary foods in the workplace. If you have a chronic condition or a disability, ask your healthcare provider for resources to support healthy weight and ask for a follow-up appointment to monitor changes in your weight or any related health conditions.

Have realistic goals. People with gradual, steady weight loss (about 1 to 2 pounds per week) are more likely to keep the weight off than people who lose weight quickly. Setting unrealistic goals, such as losing 20 pounds in 2 weeks, can leave you feeling defeated and frustrated.

Don’t do it alone. Having a good support system will help you accomplish your goals. Find family members or friends who will support your efforts. Coworkers or neighbors with similar goals might share healthy recipes and plan group physical activities.

Reward yourself for your successes. Recognize when you’re meeting your goals and be proud of your progress. Use non-food rewards, such as a bouquet of fresh flowers, a sports outing with friends, or a relaxing bath. Rewards help keep you motivated on the path to better health.
