Sponsor’s needed for Missouri Summer Food Service Program

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Missouri Summer Food Service Program provides more than 4 million meals to Missouri children each summer.
The state of Missouri receives grant funding to run the program, but more sponsors are needed to prepare and hand out meals.
Tanya Harvey is the Missouri Summer Food Service Program Manager, and she says the program can’t run without sponsors.
“Sponsors are needed in order to ensure that the meals are getting to the children that need them. If we don’t have sponsors the program doesn’t happen, “says Harvey.
The program is a nationwide food program that helps feed children up to the age of 18.
Nonprofit organizations such as schools, and other associations can qualify to be a sponsor.
Harvey says “In areas where children would qualify based on school data and if they qualify in that area then all the children in that area can eat for free.”
In the summer time when school is out it can make it harder for parents to afford that additional meal cost.
The summer food service program would provide relief to many families.
