An award-winning film called Sugarhouse is set to film right here in Southeast Missouri this weekend.

Fred Jones and Shirlee Wilson are Co-directors of the film. They share details on the premiere and more.

“Sugarhouse is a film Shirlee, and I have been working on for 4 years” says Jones. “It got started back in 2021 is when we started writing the script together. Its the story of a teenage girl whose father has left so she needs to reach out to the brother for help but the brother’s kind of a criminal himself so it kind of creates some conflict when he returns.”

The film has won multiple awards including best feature film and its world premiere was at the St. Louis International Film Festival. With many local places showing up in the film such as Wibbs drive in Jackson and Perryville Pumpkin Patch.

Williams shares their inspiration behind the film.

“The inspiration was really a documentary we had made years ago on the Gihring Family Farm. They make maple syrup, and we were just fascinated by the process and when we were trying to come up with an idea, we wanted to revolve the story around things in the area because we really wanted to highlight the Southeast Missouri area with the rural landscapes and the people here so we said lets center it around the Sugarhouse.”

Not only is a majority of the film local but all of the actors and the crew are too including lead actor Alivia Roach who is a Jackson native and starred as Maisie. The film will premiere in Perryville this weekend.
