U.S. egg prices hit a record high, local businesses are working through the impact

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — U.S. egg prices hit a record high in January. Local businesses are working through the impact of increased costs.

Broadway Bistro and Vintage Trade general manager Dina Godfrey said a lot of breakfast business means a lot of eggs.

“We go through a lot of eggs each week. This time last year, we were paying about $0.24 per egg. Now that cost has gone up to as much as $0.50 per egg,” she said. “Doesn’t sound like a whole lot but when you’re dealing in, you know, eight dozen eggs per week, it definitely adds up.”

Godfrey said, as a small business they really have to manage food costs — like the cost per egg — in order to keep prices low.

Another challenge the business has run into — limits on egg purchases at the grocery store.

“We do have food vendors — the wholesale food vendors — but I don’t normally get my eggs through them. Sometimes now I am getting them through the food vendors simply because they do have the availability,” Godfrey said.
