Williamson County sheriff warns public of scam calls claiming to be from sheriff’s office

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KBSI) – Williamson County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating after receiving calls from residents reporting fraudulent calls claiming to be from the sheriff’s office.
The caller leaves a message advising citizens they missed a court date and requests a return call.
Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich reminds residents the sheriff’s office does not make those types of calls, never asks for personal information over the phone and does not require monetary payment to avoid being arrested.
Sheriff Diederich says these types of call prey on unsuspecting citizens by creating panic and concern.
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating and “will take all steps available to identify the person or persons responsible.”
Anyone who receives these calls or any call from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and question the legitimacy can call 618-997-6541.
