CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Firefighters rescued a woman from a second-floor window during a two-alarm house fire Wednesday afternoon in Cape Girardeau.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department was dispatched at 1:42 p.m. to the 300 block of South Sprigg Street after receiving reports of smoke coming from a residence at 329 S. Sprigg St.

Fire officials said a large column of smoke was visible before crews arrived, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a working fire and bringing in additional off-duty firefighters and mutual aid personnel to staff city fire stations.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw a woman at a second-floor window in need of rescue. The fire was then upgraded to a second alarm, bringing in additional resources.

While crews assisted the resident from the second floor, firefighters simultaneously conducted an aggressive interior attack and searched the home for additional occupants. No other victims were found.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes. Firefighters remained at the scene conducting overhaul operations to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.

The home is owned by Ashleigh Hope.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department received assistance at the scene and with station coverage from the Jackson, Gordonville, Fruitland, Scott City, Benton and Scott County Rural fire departments.
