CARTERVILLE, Ill. (KBSI) – The John A. Logan Vols’’ men’s basketball team is riding a wave and don’t appear to be coming down any time soon, as they defeated Northwest Florida State College, 73-30, Saturday to winthe Division I National Junior College Athletic Association men’s championship. This marks their first title in school history.
“It has been wild. It was fun. If you asked anybody at the beginning of the year if we could win a national championship, all of our guys, and our coaching staff, would have said, ‘Yes.’ I am happy for them, and I am proud of them for the hard work and dedication it takes to win something like that. They all deserve it. It is huge; not just for our program or John A. Logan Athletics, but it is huge for John A. Logan in general. Our game was on ESPN. That is national TV,” said first-year Vols head coach Tyler Smithpeters.
Under Smithpeters, the Vols compiled a 33-2 record overall, going 16-0 in conference play.
The team went 14-1 at home, 11-0 at away tilts, and 8-1 on neutral courts en route to the win.
The Vols won four games in as many days.
The team authored a 31-game winning streak to close out the season on the way to the title.
The two losses came back in November by a combined 11 points.
