Police urge motorists to slow down

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- The Cape Girardeau Police Department is urging residents to slow down, pay attention and look out for kids outside enjoying their soon to be summer vacation.
“So speeding is a major factor in crashes.”
In 2022, there were a total of 143 total speed related crashes in Cape Girardeau. two of those resulted in fatal crashes.
Bobby Newton, the Police Information Officer, for the Cape Girardeau Police Department says, “School’s getting out soon, kids are going to be playing in the neighborhoods, you know we don’t want a ball to roll across the street and someone not be able to stop in time you know because of the speed they’re going.”
Cape Police Officers will be enforcing the speed ordinance in Cape Girardeau in order to keep everyone safe.
Newton says, “We encourage you to pay attention to your speed. Watch what’s going on around you and make it safe for everybody.”
Schools will be letting out and the neighborhoods will be filled with kids playing. pay attention to your speed especially while driving through neighborhoods.
