CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) –

Cape students met with city and county officials today as part of Youth in Government Day, an almost 40-year optimist club tradition of connecting students with local government.

Chloe Merkley, a senior at Cape Central High School says, “My career is kind of set, but it’s super interesting to get to learn about and to get to see everything these guys do.”

One group of Cape Central High School students was paired with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
They learned about firefighting techniques and got to participate in some aerial work.

David Goehman, First Responder for the Cape Girardeau Fire Department says, “Just letting them get a feel, we’ve already went around, see what the aerial can do, capabilities and operating functions of it.”

Mayor Stacy Kinder and County Commissioner and Optimist, Charlie Herbst, co-hosted the morning session, with Fire Battalion Chief Shawn Morris helping to teach the students, “We always want this to be an opportunity, we accept that college isn’t for everyone. This is a good career if someone wants to get involved with that.”
Over 30 advanced placement government students from the high school toured all department facilities and met for lunch downtown to discuss their experience and give input on future city plans.
