Cape Girardeau firefighters conduct training
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The City of Cape Girardeau Fire Department has an important job to do, helping to keep our citizens safe is their top and only priority.
“I’m just happy to be here.”
The first responders spend their day by first getting assigned to their post and then going through a rundown of the day’s plan.
Chris Miller, is a Driver Operator First Responder, with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
“So here at the fire department, we work 24-hour shifts, and in those 24 hours, a lot can happen, and we really never know what can happen,” said Miller.
That means a call to save a life can come at any moment.
“No matter what time of day, whatever the need, the fire department here in the City of Cape Girardeau is ready to save the day,” said Miller.
To maintain that constant readiness, first responders are always training for potential emergency situations.
Trey Ellis, is a first responder with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
“Today [Monday] we’re doing a lot of different hose deployments, using high rise packs, forcing interior doors, steel doors, practicing on potential apartment fire slash dorm fire in the colleges,” said Ellis.
Training sessions like this help firefighters determine the exact procedure they need to use to quickly and efficiently fulfill their mission.
“I have an idea and a game plan on how we’re going to attack that fire. Depending on where it’s at, the situations an idea on stairwells, doors different types of environments I might be gaining access to,” said Ellis.
Monday’s training highlighted that even handrails could prove to be an issue that only training can prepare them for.
“If a fire does happen like this it’s important that we do get that hose up the stairsdown the hallway, fast and quickly so that we can put out the fire and minimize the damage,” said Miller.
