American Red Cross needs volunteers
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The American Red Cross continues its tireless search for blood donors, as the need for blood remains constant.
La Croix Church in Cape Girardeau hosted a blood drive organized by the American Red Cross.
Shelby Bentley, the Donor Recruitment Account Manager for the American Red Cross in Cape Girardeau, emphasizes the ongoing need for blood to meet the medical requirements of various individuals.
“People involved in car accidents, individuals with sickle cell anemia, those undergoing surgery, and those with chronic diseases all require blood. The need for blood is constant,” stated Bentley.
She further revealed that in May, the nation fell short by 26,000 pints of blood donations, heightening concerns about potential shortages during the summer months. To mitigate this, the American Red Cross urges more people to come forward and donate blood.
Bentley emphasized the significance of O-negative blood, which is in high demand due to its universal compatibility.
In emergency situations where a patient’s blood type is unknown, O-negative blood can be used. However, she stressed that all blood types are needed, regardless of the individual’s blood type.
“O-negative is the universal donor; they can give blood to anybody. However, they can only receive O-negative blood. Consequently, we constantly face a shortage of O-negative blood. Nevertheless, we need every single blood type. It doesn’t matter if you’re AB, we need your blood,” Bentley explained.
Addressing potential concerns surrounding blood donation, Bentley reassured individuals that the process is quick and straightforward.
“Giving blood takes 5 to 15 minutes, and the actual needle insertion is swift. Afterward, you can leave, and we always have promotions or giveaways as a token of appreciation.”
The American Red Cross continues to rely on the generosity of volunteers to meet the ongoing need for blood. By stepping forward to donate, individuals can play a crucial role in saving lives and supporting those in need.
