Artist paints mini-mural on overpass piers in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky. (KBSI) – A mini-mural recently popped up on some overpass piers in Paducah.
Artist Michael Secor had worked on some large mural projects in urban areas before moving to Paducah. Once he settled in, he started looking for some spots where he could do a small mural project in town.
Drivers on Mallory Street can see the mini-mural on the U.S. 60 Beltline Overpass piers near the Mallory Street intersection with Brown Street and Little Avenue.
Secor noticed the overpass had graffiti that needed to be covered and wanted to brighten things up.
He applied for and received a permit from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to paint a mural on the bridge piers. Secor completed the work over the last few weeks.
“I wanted to paint over the graffiti with images of large flowers. We created a design with 6 flowers on 3 sides of each pillar,” Secor said. “I estimate each side of a pillar to be 3 ft wide and the mural to be 6 ft tall. The images are simple and colorful. The goal is to give this otherwise dark space a touch of positivity and vibrancy. Flowers are a perfect symbol of that. There is a significant amount of traffic on Malory Street, as it connects two different neighborhoods and leads to U.S. 60. I hope the visual change to the pillars will positively impact the people that pass by.”
Secor paid for the paint and other supplies necessary for the project. He hopes the small project will lead to opportunities to do more murals around Paducah.
