Gas prices dip below $3 in Missouri, near-record travel numbers expected this Thanksgiving

Gas Prices 111723

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Gas prices are on the decline.

The average price for a gallon of gas in Missouri dipped to $2.96 this week. This is 7 cents less compared to last week and 35 cents less than this time last year.

AAA Missouri Public Affairs Specialist Nick Chabarria said while falling crude oil prices have contributed largely to this decrease, there is another significant factor at play.

“We’ve also seen a dip in gasoline demand as Fall approached and cooler weather starts to come,” he said.

AAA expects some 50 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more away from home during the Thanksgiving travel period.

“Travel has been coming back, and this Thanksgiving is going to be no exception,” Chabarria said.

And while a subsequent increase in demand could cause fluctuations in gas prices, Chabarria advised drivers not to worry.

“There’s really no indication right now that gas prices will rise or spike in the last few days before folks start heading out for the holidays, so barring any major upheavals in the oil and gas industry, prices should hold steady or even come down some,” he said.

And before you head out on a long trip, Chabarria said in addition to maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations, make sure those tires are nice and aired up.

“Under-inflated tires are not only a safety hazard out on the road, but they’re also going to diminish your vehicle’s fuel economy, especially over a long road trip, so take the time now to make sure your vehicle is ready for that big Thanksgiving road trip,” Chabarria said.
