Mayfield city leaders mark 2nd anniversary of tornado with groundbreakings
MAYFIELD, Ky. (KBSI) – City leaders plan an event on Monday, December 11 to commerate the two year anniversary since the deadly tornado outbreak on December 10-11 in Mayfield.
An EF4 tornado made impact on December 10, 2021. It was the deadliest December tornado outbreak on record with 89 reported deaths, according to the National Weather Service.
A complex weather system produced 66 confirmed tornadoes through multiple states in the midwest and Ohio Valley.
It did more than $3 billion worth of damage.
City leaders held two groundbreakings on Monday, Dec. 11 The first groundbreaking wasfor the new Public Works building at 1101 Old Pryorsburg at 1:30 p.m. The second groundbreaking is 2:30 p.m. for the new courthouse on Broadway.
“It’s important that people see that, these people are resilient.” Says, Susan Higdon is a retired educator in Graves County who has high hopes for the new building, she says, “We can show people that we’re back and we’re strong and just look around and you’ll see construction everywhere.”
Graves County Judge Executive, Jesse Perry spoke on the importance of this major milestone in the town’s recovery.
“It’s just that two years from the night of the disaster and here we are, and I’m just thankful that we’re here today.”
Perry says that with future generations coming along, he hopes the new structure will withhold the test of time.
“We want it to be a design that will last for the next 100 years, and the building to last for the next 100 years.”
