City leaders discuss raise proposal for fire and police

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- The City of Cape Girardeau public safety pay was discussed at the city council meeting, December 18th.

Cape Girardeau needs more competitive pay for its police officers and firefighters according to a release from the City of Cape.

To fund it, Police Chief Wes Blair says the city council will consider asking voters for the real estate and personal property tax rates closer to what other cities are already collecting.

Under a proposed plan, police officers and firefighters would get an 8% pay increase in year one.

It was approved that the voters will decide on the ballot in April.

Fox23’s Sasha Moore will have more on this tonight at 9 p.m.
