Police chase leads to arrest in Graves County
MAYFIELD Ky. (KBSI) – A team effort between the Kentucky State Police and the Graves County Sheriff’s Office took place on April 28 to apprehend a Donald Sweatt.
It was around 3:40 a.m. when Kentucky State Police informed Graves County Sheriff’s Office deputies, that they were in a pursuit that started in McCracken County. KSP were after a dark colored passenger car driving south on u-s 45, headed toward the Graves County line.
Graves County Chief Deputy Jeremy Prince says, “We have to weight our pursuits carefully to make sure that the person we are pursuing that is refusing to stop that we need to apprehend them. And then we have to balance that with public safety.”
Acting fast, Deputies Tyler Crane, Larry Jones and Austin Ramage headed to us 45 north where Deputy Jones was able to place stop sticks in the south lanes. The device caused driver, identified as Donald Sweatt, to lose control of the car after the front tires were deflated.
“Sometimes people don’t stop when once they hit those tire deflation devices. But, it does force them to drive slower. Even if they wear those tires completely out and they’re driving on the wheels, they can’t drive as fast.” Said Prince.
Which Prince says, the option to use stop sticks makes these pursuits less dangerous to the public.
The Deputy says, “The suspect took off running, and we were able to apprehend him after a short distance and take him into custody.”
Deputies believed that Sweatt was under the influence. The suspect has been charged with fleeing and evading police, operating an motor vehicle under the influence, and resisting arrest.
“It would’ve bee a whole lot easier for him to stop, probably just would’ve had a DUI and some traffic offences. But now in Graves County he’s looking and 2-3 felonies and other charges as well.” Said Prince.
Sweatt is currently being held in the McCracken County Jail
