SEMO Electric reminds consumers of electrical hazards

(KBSI) – Every year, in the U.S., electrical accidents cause nearly 4,000 injuries and most are preventable. Which is why experts are reminding consumers about National Electrical Safety Month.

Jared Kelley is Manager of Environmental Safety at SEMO Electric, a company that provides over 16 thousand consumers with electric service. He says its also important to educate people about the risk that comes with consuming electricity.

“We’re always on our toes, always focusing on safety. Trying to get that message out to see the hazards, and just be aware of your surroundings,” said Kelley. “I can’t stress that enough.”

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, faulty home electrical wiring causes 26,000 residential fires a year, hundreds of deaths, and thousands of injuries. unfortunately, electrical hazards often go unaddressed until it is too late.

“If you know you’ve got a defective appliance, always take them out of service. Don’t keep using it. As far as extension cord, if you see a cut or missing ground prone, it’s there for a reason,” said Kelley.

Experts also suggest you check electrical outlets for loose-fitting plugs, because those plugs can cause shocks or even start fires. You should also replace missing, or broken wall plates so the inner wiring components are exposed. Additionally, if you have young children, use safety covers on unused outlets.

“Fire is a big issue with electrical hazards. Injury, electrocution is one. You always want to pay attention and be aware of your surroundings,” Kelley added.

People should also be aware of electrical safety, while outdoors, by knowing the location of powerlines; especially when using long metal tools like ladders, pool skimmers, and pruning poles. When it comes to your roof, never climb one in bad weather.
