Serve Sikeston Sunday to feature a Trailer Brigaded as the Community Recovers from the Storm

SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) – The Sikeston community continues to recover and adapt as they remove trees and debris in the aera from the EF-2 Tornado that swept the aera on Sunday.
“We really never get anything that’s bad, so when the alarm went off, we thought it would be just like a normal alarm that just goes off and then sooner or later everything would be alright. But it wasn’t like that the tree fell and I watched it fall on my daughter’s car and it smashed it and my daughter was beside me and she was like go to the bathroom but I was thinking it wasn’t going to be that bad.
Sikeston resident Tory Nabors and his family continue to recover from the storm that swept through the aera on Sunday, leaving their family with this destroyed vehicle.
But as the recovery process continues for Sikeston and surrounding counties, we caught up with Chaplain,  John McHaffie who tells us how he and others are helping the community through this recovery process
” well, this last week we had a hot meal every day and we feed the neighborhood first responders, lineman , anyone working in storm cleanup we feed, but beyond that this weekend on Sunday we are going to do a community clean up its called the trailer brigaded its serve Sikeston Sunday. At twelve thirty to five thirty we are trying to recruit as many trucks and trailers to come to Sikeston to go through these neighborhoods and have our team load the trailers and help the neighborhood out just get back to normal”
On top of the efforts to help remove trees and more, McHaffie and other have organized a care brigade as well.
“the supplies we have here are from convoy of hope, out of Springfield MO we are going to do a care brigade as well we are going to have accouple trailers just doing well checks on neighbors to see how people are doing. we are going to take their branches and give them some much needed supplies.”
McHaffie and others are excited for the Opportunity to help families in the community like the Nabors family as the town works to build back to where it was before….. Tory Nabors told us about how he and his family are making the best out of a bad situation.
” This big tree right here, it broke it off at the top, and thank the lord that it wasn’t down below because everybody knows a tree is a lot stronger than a house. And if it can take a tree down like that it really would have torn our house up. But that was our loss there and I thank God for that, we lost a car but my daughter has insurance, and I’m lending my car, I’ve got a scooter, I’ve got a scooter I drive and we are making the best out of a bad situation”
Through it all both McHaffie and Nabors say they are thankful for the amount of support throughout the community and beyond as they work to lend a helping hand to others, John McHaffie talks about how moved he is watching the community respond.
“one of the things that I noticed about this week about this storm and all storm can be potentially be bad but storms cause neighbors to help neighbors and I’ve been moved all week watching our local department of public safety police officers and fireman and public workers and volunteers and churches and pastors and the sheriffs office and its been amazing to watch neighbors and see that happen”
Tory Nabors took time to thank all the people in the community who have helped his family and others get through this difficult situation.
” Id like to give a shoutout to all the people that came together especially the light people and other people across wherever they came from to help us because I’ve been seeing them ever since it happen, and they just all over they on their jab and they getting everyone power back as quick as possible and i really apricate that”
For those who want to help lend a hand to the Sikeston community, John McHaffie told us how you can help support the Trailer Brigade on Serve Sikeston Sunday
“you can help by showing up at Sikeston first assemble of God at 12:30 we are going to have registration for your trailer for the purpose of verification, and then we are going to send you on your destination local around the church aera and the group will load up your trailer and you’ll go unload your trailer and we will just keep doing that as long as people are willing to do it”
