Public Works continues to resolve staffing issue

Public Works Staffing 6/18

CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo. (KBSI) – For years, city leaders say the public works department in Cape Girardeau endured a staffing shortage. Now, they’re working continuously to resolve the issue.

After being in the Department of Public Works for a while, Brock Davis says staffing has gotten a lot better in the last few years. Although the company is on slow and steady path, it’s one that he confidently feels will see positive growth.

“It took a while, but it is getting better. Things are kind of getting close to normal. Whatever that is but we can see things are picking up a little.” Davis said. “I think it was rough, not only for us, but for everybody because we had that law that people either couldn’t work or didn’t work. And it was really hard for not only cities and departments because it didn’t have staffing and workers.”

The City of Cape runs an array of different divisions; whether it’s the street department with sewer and water, fleet department to take care of recycling, waste management, or traffic lights. They handle many things we count on to keep our city thriving.

“Public Works is very important because we’re pretty much what makes the city function.” He mentions.

Another cause for concern over staffing is due to the job market. Over the years, many employers have raised their pay rate, making for ideal job seekers.

“But one of the plus signs we always try to tell people is working with the City of Cape, full time position, you get free insurance, and you get a retirement plan.” Davis assured.

According to Davis, to ensure staffing is always accommodated, new hires have a chance to get on the job training. So if they don’t have a CDL, it’s no issue. Getting people certified and comfortable with their job positions is a top priority.

He says, “We have a great group of guys to work with. They seem to be pretty happy about working here. We have people that could go to other places, but they don’t. Because they enjoy working here. We have a good working environment. And it helps them in the future, gives them some skills.”

Additionally, it’s an environment he believes keeps employees satisfied and brings inquiring newcomers.

“Applicants are starting to roll in. We are starting to hire some people. We encourage people to still apply.” He added.

As of now, Davis says staffing is in a good place, as it is moving on an upwards path. Something he hopes stays that way.
