Scott City Middle School football team beats the heat by moving practice indoors
SCOTT CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – As the summer heat intensifies, the Scott City Middle School football team took steps to ensure player safety by relocating their practice indoors on Tuesday.
Head Coach David Spriggs made the decision to move the practice inside due to the sweltering temperatures during their scheduled practice hours. “Welcome to Missouri, we know what the heat’s like,” Spriggs said, acknowledging the state’s heat.
The team is fortunate to have access to three indoor gymnasiums, providing an ideal alternative to practicing in the extreme heat. “We are very fortunate here at our school. We have three gymnasiums that we can use. We have high school, middle school, and elementary,” Spriggs explained.
Yesterday, the team braved the heat during outdoor practice, but player Jonah Foulk admitted to not drinking enough water beforehand, leaving him feeling dizzy. “No,” Foulk replied when asked if he had hydrated properly.
However, he vowed to prioritize hydration for future warm practices, saying, “Yes, because I was very dizzy.”
Coach Spriggs emphasized the team’s commitment to following Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) guidelines for practices during warm weather. “We have a trainer that uses a wet bulb thermometer and keeps us abreast of what the wet bulb says, and we follow MSHSAA guidelines. If it’s above (the recommended threshold), we have the fortune to go inside to one of the gyms.” By prioritizing player safety and utilizing their indoor facilities, the Scott City Middle School football team continues to prepare for the upcoming season while beating the heat.
