ILLINOIS(KBSI) – Illinois law makers are in agreement and pushing that all mail be suspended to Illinois inmates at this time after a large number of IDOC staff has been treated at area hospitals for exposure to unknown substances through mail addressed to inmates.

The Illinois General Assembly wrote a letter to the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) requesting to temporarily suspend all mail to Illinois prisons.

According to IDOC they are still investigating an incident that sent several staff members to the hospital at Menard Correctional Facility in August.

It’s possible staff was exposed through mail.

Several other prisons in Illinois have had this same issue.

Illinois law makers wrote in a letter to IDOC:

“For the safety of our correctional officers and the individuals under their protection, IDOC must take immediate action. Ignoring this issue puts both staff and inmates at unnecessary risk. We have a responsibility to prevent these incidents and to ensure that all hardworking IDOC employees are protected.”

Lawmakers requesting for immediate action include Illinois State Senator Dan Fowler and many others.
