Recent numbers of School Shootings in the US

Madison Wisconsin Shooting

MADISON Wi. (KBSI) – According to the most recent numbers from C-N-N there have been 83 school shootings in the year of 2024.

Eighty-Three school shootings in the US leaving 38 people dead and at least 115 other victims injured.

There have been 27 shootings on College Campuses and 56 in the K-12 grade range.

One result to prevent these shootings are schools trying to get metal detectors, security, and only allowing clear backpacks to try and minimize gun violence.

“In today’s times and what we’re dealing with, school shootings are unfortunately becoming sort of what we would call a norm,” said Rowe.

Tyler Rowe is the School Resource Officer in Sikeston. He says he’s heard about the shooting in Wisconsin and his heart goes out to the victims who were affected.

Rowe explains that he tries to put together a strategy with his team so they can know as much knowledge as possible when it comes to protection in schools. The Sikeston Police Department also pays attention to any school threats to prevent any violence inside the halls before it happens.

“Enforcement and schools have transitioned other approaches to safety and moved that higher up to the forefront to ensure that schools are a safe place for kids. whether that be through training, security measures, information sharing and just overall knowledge of what happens at these events,” said Rowe.

Rowe says when school shootings like this happen it hits hard to everyone in the department no matter where the shooting is at.

He says he doesn’t understand the frequent violence in schools as kids should be there to learn and learn only.

“I think any of us in law enforcement and education are deeply saddened. there’s lots of questions that are probably being asked at this time, but we want to ensure that the school is a safe place for these kids to, not only, have an education, but have that safety.”

For added protection, Rowe says police check in with the schools and scan the grounds as often as possible.

“Thing is our cooperation with the Sikeston Public Schools, with, with the board office, to ensure the safety, by being present in these schools, making sure that faculty, staff and students all know that we’re there for their safety,” said Rowe.

More schools in the Fox 23 area tell us they are working to install metal detectors and other protective devices.
