Roads reopen in Kentucky after flooding and snow
BENTON Ky. (KBSI) – After a week of back-to-back weather challenges, Kentucky’s roadways are beginning to clear. Emergency crews and plows are now reporting that many roads are once again safe for travel.
Carrie Dillard, public information officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1, said the combination of flooding and snow has kept crews busy since Sunday.
“These back-to-back challenges were very impactful for us this week,” Dillard said. “We’ve been putting up barricades and signs to shut down flooded roads and let the sun do the rest.”
Dillard reminded drivers to follow safety warnings, emphasizing, “Turn around, don’t drown.”
Despite the difficult conditions, Dillard noted improvements. “Our road conditions today are greatly improved compared to yesterday and the day before,” she said.
Marshall County Judge Executive Kevin Spraggs praised local road crews for their hard work. “Our road department did an incredible job,” he said, noting that crews had pre-treated roads before the snowstorm.
Spraggs urged caution despite the improvements. “There are still some state roads with snow and ice, but considering the low temperatures and flooding, we’ve been fortunate to experience minimal damage,” he said.
Crews with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet paused snow removal efforts today, with plans to resume work tomorrow morning.
