Armed Robbery Shows the Importance of Safe Exchange Zones in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — What began as a routine attempt to buy a gaming console quickly turned into a dangerous situation. Two unknown men showed up to the exchange, one pulled a gun on the buyer, demanding his money. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. last night, police said, as they continue to investigate the armed robbery.
Residents of South Park Avenue expressed their concerns but are keeping their confidence in local law enforcement.
“Branton informed me that there was an armed robbery on my street. I hadn’t heard about it, but I’m here to tell you that there’s nothing to fear,” said Trenton Walker, a resident of the area. “The Cape Girardeau police should have it under control, and I still feel safe on South Park.”
Despite the nature of the crime, Walker discusses that he believes his neighbors should not live in fear.
“I would suppose everyone feels safe. I mean, in the community, everybody should feel safe,” he added.
The robbery took place near a church, something Walker found interesting.
“It’s kind of messed up to do it in front of a church—God’s watching.” Walker said.
In response to incidents like this, Assistant Police Chief in Cape Girardeau, Jeff Bonham pointed to the importance of the Safe Exchange Zone he helped establish at the Cape Girardeau Police Department in 2023. The designated area, located in the front parking lot, is monitored by surveillance cameras and frequently patrolled by officers.
“There’s an area at the police department’s front parking lot with signs posted where you can safely do exchanges—whether for child custody, online purchases, or other transactions,” Bonham explained.
The goal, he said, is to provide a well-lit, secure space where residents can feel comfortable meeting strangers for transactions.
“We figured that would be a good thing to implement. There’s lighting, cameras, and officers constantly driving in the area,” Bonham said.
Since its creation, the Safe Exchange Zone has seen steady use.
“It’s used daily. I see people out there doing child custody exchanges, online exchanges, and marketplace transactions. It puts people at ease knowing they can meet here at the police department,” Bonham noted.
Authorities hope that increased awareness of the Safe Exchange Zone will encourage more residents to use it, helping prevent future crimes and ensuring that Cape Girardeau remains a safe place for all.
