Catholics reflect on Pope Francis’ legacy as they await his successor

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Catholics across the region are uniting in remembrance of Pope Francis and reflecting on his legacy as they await the selection of the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.

Members of Sacred Heart Church in Southern Illinois said the papacy represents a critical role in the faith, tracing its lineage back to Saint Peter, whom Catholics recognize as the first pope.

With deep admiration for Pope Francis’ leadership over the past decade, many parishioners are now expressing hope that his successor will continue his path of compassion and humility.

“You have to have somebody there to guide you,” said Gina Cushman, a lifelong Catholic from southern Illinois. “We are the lamb, and he’s our shepherd. He oversees his flock.”

Cushman said she will always remember Pope Francis for his joyful spirit and dedication to peace.

“He was always smiling, and it was contagious,” she said. “I think everyone who saw him smile would smile themselves. He had such a love for life. Even though he’s gone, I think he’ll continue to inspire people to open up to the church and to listen.”

Pope Francis was also widely admired for his humility and commitment to social justice.

“His compassion and dedication to peace really stood out,” Cushman added.

Father Daniel Belken, director of worship for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, emphasized the pope’s role as a source of spiritual stability for the global Catholic community.

“As a priest, I’m not looking for big changes,” Belken said. “I’m looking for someone who will uphold our traditions and teachings, and lead us forward into the 21st century.”

Belken added that in a world of constant change, Catholics need a leader who will anchor the Church and continue to represent Christ on Earth.

CNN reported Monday morning that Pope Francis’ funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. Roman time.
