Poplar Bluff health officials warn of Measles risk, urge vaccination and vigilance

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo., (KBSI) — With three measles cases confirmed in Missouri this year, Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center and its medical staff are encouraging residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families against the highly contagious virus.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), measles poses the greatest risk to children under 5, adults over 20, pregnant individuals and those with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms typically start with a high fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a distinctive rash.

“Measles cases are rising, and it’s crucial for our community to be aware of the symptoms and take simple steps to protect themselves and those around them,” said Dr. David Wood, a primary care provider with Regional Physician Services.

The CDC emphasizes that receiving two doses of a measles-containing vaccine offers strong protection against the virus. Practicing good hygiene and avoiding crowded areas when traveling to outbreak zones can also help prevent the spread.
