Missouri Governor declares state of emergency amid potential protests in Missouri
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KBSI) — Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe on Thursday declared a state of emergency in response to the potential for dangerous protests in several urban areas across the state.
Executive Order 25-25, issued June 12, talks about the possibility of protests or other events creating “conditions of distress and hazards” in cities such as Kansas City, Springfield, and St. Louis. The order shows Missouri’s commitment to protecting the right to peaceful assembly and protest, while also enforcing public safety.
“The rule of law must be maintained,” Kehoe wrote in the order, noting that local jurisdictions may need additional state support to help keep residents, visitors, and property safe.
The executive order authorizes the Adjutant General to activate portions of the Missouri National Guard as necessary to assist local authorities if necessary. The Guard is directed to take action, use equipment, and provide aid to civilian officials under the Governor’s direction.
The emergency declaration remains in effect through June 30, 2025, unless extended.
