Kentucky joins multi-state campaign to warn drivers of low-clearance bridges

FRANKFORT, Ky. (KBSI) — Team Kentucky has joined a multi-state safety effort to raise awareness about the dangers of low-clearance bridges and encourage drivers to “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right.”

The campaign, which runs July 22-26, targets drivers of commercial trucks, rental vans, RVs, and other vehicles that may be too tall to safely pass under certain bridges.

Gov. Andy Beshear emphasized the importance of knowing one’s vehicle height to prevent accidents and ensure safety on Kentucky’s roadways.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is participating in the campaign with 18 other states and the District of Columbia. The effort aims to reduce the risk of bridge hits, which can damage vehicles and infrastructure, cause delays, and put the public and emergency responders at risk.

Drivers are encouraged to follow these tips:

Measure vehicle height before traveling
Check door decals or owner’s manuals for maximum height
Heed height warning signs before bridges and overpasses
Ensure dump truck beds are lowered and tall equipment is stowed properly

Kentucky has about 180 bridges posted with vertical clearance lower than the 14-foot federal standard.
