Carbondale to host free bystander intervention training

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Illinois Department of Human Rights and the City of Carbondale are hosting a free training session, “From Bystander to Upstander: Preventing Harm in Public Spaces,” on Aug. 26 at the Carbondale Civic Center.

The interactive session, starting at 3 p.m., aims to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools to safely intervene in incidents of harassment and conflict.

“Creating a safe and inclusive community requires all of us to take an active role,” said Stan Reno, Carbondale city manager. “We’re proud to partner with the Illinois Department of Human Rights to bring this important training to our residents.”

The training is grounded in the “5 Ds” of bystander intervention and will explore the impact of harassment, offer strategies for safety and introduce practical de-escalation techniques.
