Illinois Department of Transportation accepting applications for Safe Routes to School Program
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — The Illinois Department of Transportation is now accepting applications for its Safe Routes to School program, which provides funding for projects that promote walking, biking and rolling to school.
The program, administered by IDOT using federal funds, aims to improve safety and reduce traffic around schools. This year’s grant cycle will distribute $12 million, with a maximum award of $250,000.
Eligible projects include:
– New sidewalks and traffic-calming measures
– Bicycle facilities and public education programs
– Improvements to increase accessibility for those with disabilities
Successful applications must demonstrate how the projects encourage students to walk, bike or roll. Eligible applicants include school districts, local governments, planning organizations and nonprofit associations.
Applications are due Oct. 13, with awards announced in the spring. For more information, visit the Safe Routes to School homepage or email DOT.SafeRoutes@illinois.gov.
